Three things to settle before you buy
In this order. Reversing it ends with a winch that does not fit the bumper, or does not pull the vehicle out of the mud.
Pull
Gross vehicle weight rating times 1.5. That is a minimum, not a suggestion. A vehicle rated at 2,600 kg needs 3,900 kg, so an 8,000 lb (3,630 kg) winch is already too small.
Rope
Steel or synthetic. This is not a choice between worse and better — each has its own set of drawbacks. Moving from steel to synthetic means replacing the roller fairlead with an aluminium hawse.
Mounting
The winch you calculated still has to fit the bumper or the mounting plate. Bolt pattern and drum height are two figures worth asking about before you order.
Four families of winch, one catalogue
WARN does not make one winch in several sizes. The lines differ in motor, gearing, sealing and control — which is why they cost differently at the same rated pull.
We are a service centre, not only a shop
A winch runs a dozen times a year and spends the rest of its life sitting in water and road salt. Failures are predictable, and most of them can be repaired rather than replaced.
Diagnostics
Measurement under load: battery, cable sizes, voltage drops across cables and module, motor running both ways. Very often what looks like a worn winch turns out to be the vehicle's wiring.
Control module and solenoids
The commonest failure across the brand. The symptom “it only pulls one way” almost always ends here.
Seals and gear train
Water in the gear train is a matter of time, not of failure. Replacing seals before winter is far cheaper than a gear train after it.
We publish only what the manufacturer published
The technical data on this site comes from the Warn Industries catalogue. Where the manufacturer does not publish something, we say so, instead of writing a number that sounds plausible.
- Line speed under load — WARN does not publish it for most lines. If it matters to you, write to us and we will ask the manufacturer.
- IP rating — declared for some models only. We do not add it where it is absent.
- Winch weight and bolt pattern — not in the manufacturer's online catalogue. We give them on request, from the manual for the specific model.
- Road approval — the winch and the bumper are two separate matters. A winch itself needs no entry in the registration document; the way it is mounted may.
