A winch is a repairable device. In most cases replacing the control module or the seals is cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
The commonest failures come in an order. First the control module or solenoids — contacts suffer from damp and salt. Second the seals, which let water into the gear train. Only third the motor, and usually not the whole motor, only the brushes.
When ordering parts, quote the winch part number from the plate on the housing. The same line carried different modules in different years, and not all of them interchange.
If you do not know what has failed, do not buy parts on a hunch. The symptoms “it will not pull”, “it pulls one way only” and “it pulls slowly” each have several possible causes, and two of them lie in the vehicle's wiring rather than the winch. Have it diagnosed, or send the winch to us.
