Fitting and first run

Fitting and first run

A winch is only as good as its mounting and its power supply. The two commonest problems reported as “a faulty winch” lie outside the winch itself.

Before you order

Three figures to have in advance: mounting bolt pattern, drum height and space for the control module. The first two decide whether the winch fits the bumper or the plate. The third is often forgotten — on some lines the module is a separate box that has to go somewhere.

The manufacturer does not publish these dimensions in its online catalogue; they are in the manual for the specific model. Write with the model you are considering and we will give them before you buy.

Power

This is the part that gets skipped, and the part that later looks like a winch failure. Under full load a vehicle winch draws several hundred amps. At that current, every metre of undersized cable and every oxidised joint turns into a voltage drop.

The symptom is distinctive: the winch starts, slows after a few seconds, the lights dim and the force falls away. That is not the motor's fault. Before replacing anything, test the battery under load and check both cable sizes and the quality of the earth connection.

The manufacturer warns separately: never route cables across sharp edges or near moving parts. At this current a chafed supply cable does not blow a fuse — it catches fire.

First run

First with no load on the rope: check that the winch runs both ways, that the clutch disengages the drum and that the remote works in both directions.

Then stretch the rope. This is the step the manufacturer calls critical and most owners skip: spool out almost all the rope, anchor it to a fixed point and wind it back under moderate load, keeping the wraps lying evenly side by side.

At least five wraps of rope must remain on the drum. The rope's attachment to the drum is not rated to carry the full load.

What not to do when fitting

Do not shorten the factory power cables to tidy things up — their gauge and length are chosen for the starting current.

Do not mount a winch on a bumper that is not made for recovery. A styling bumper and a bumper with a winch plate are two different structures, however similar they look.

Do not leave the clutch permanently disengaged. The drum then spins freely while driving and the rope slackens.
