Steel and synthetic ropes
Rope is a consumable and the most frequently replaced part of a winch. A replacement must keep the same diameter, length and strength class.
The manufacturer gives three conditions for a correct replacement: same length, same diameter, strength matched to the winch rating. A thicker, higher-rated rope will not fit the same length on the drum — and excess rope on a drum is not a bonus but a risk of crushing the lower layers.
When moving from steel to synthetic, change the fairlead. The manufacturer states it plainly: steel rope leaves small burrs on rollers and on the fairlead, and those cut synthetic line. Synthetic takes a new large-radius aluminium hawse, not a used roller fairlead.
A new rope must be stretched before first use. Wound loosely and then loaded for the first time, it bites into itself and crushes the lower layers. Five minutes of work that adds years to the rope's life.
